Dr. K is a psychotherapist who specializes in trauma and working with communities of color with an emphasis on the South Asian community.
My Style
I deeply value the relationship between therapist and client and believe that therapy is a collaborative process. I approach therapy with a compassionate and open stance, striving to create a genuine connection with each of my clients. I believe that this approach allows individuals to recognize their strengths while being vulnerable about their needs and concerns.
I enjoy working with individuals from various cultural backgrounds. As a 1st generation Indian-American female, I appreciate the impact of culture and identity on how we make meaning of the world and our relationships. My professional interests include working individually with clients who struggle with issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma & gender violence to name a few. Additionally, I have a keen interest in working with individuals of color - especially South Asian individuals - who experience stress related to marginalization, acculturation and intergenerational conflict.
My Background
I was born and raised in New Jersey and moved to the Midwest to pursue my dual doctorate in Clinical Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. I’ve made the Midwest home ever since and feel grateful for opportunities to work in various settings here in Chicago. It has been an honor to work at Cook County Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Program (Cook County Department of Corrections), Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court (Lake County Adult Probation), the Edward J. Hines VA Hospital and at various educational institutions (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Adler, and Northwestern). Each of these experiences has shaped my skill set as a South Asian American therapist and allows me to work with people from all walks of life in the private practice setting.
